My book is filled with grooves, not exercises, but if you play the grooves, you will get the exercise. That's the way I always liked to learn to play. The CD has me playing all the grooves and you should try to capture the feel I'm playing with and use your own interpretation. You can also use these grooves to get together and play with a drummer friend.

This book has been used by teachers at BIT, The University of Miami and North Texas to name a few.This book contains the most modern up-to-date styles of slap available. I divided the book into three chapters. The first concentrates on straight funk grooves. You will find grooves in the styles of 70's and 80's funk. The difference is in the modern fingerings used to play them. These fingerings will open up new ideas and help your playing sound fresh. The second chapter deals with only thumb grooves. There is not another book that deals with this aspect of slap playing. You'll be able to develop incredible thumb speed, which I feel is the true key to playing slap bass lines. The third chapter focuses on hip hop and shuffle grooves. All these grooves contain a level of swing that is truly hard to master.

• Although the author’s fingerings and positions are shown for each of the Hotlines, you may want to make some adjustments to make them more comfortable.

• The last and most important thing is to work the lines, in whole or in part, into your playing right away.

Mauro Giuliani (Bisceglie 1781 - Naples 1829) wrote works for the guitar in a wide variety of genres: sonatas, variations, dances, rondos, pot-pourris, studies, fantasies and transcriptions of vocal and instrumental compositions of his time. He also used the guitar as the solo instrument in three important orchestral concertos as well as in chamber works, including duos with violin, flute, voice, piano and second guitar.

All these works, ranging from the technically simple to the most exacting tests of virtuosity, constitute the perfect expression of Giuliani’s masterful knowledge of the instrument, on which he was also an accomplished performer. And they all bear the stamp of his fertile creative genius. Among the musicians of his day Giuliani must be acknowledged not only as one of the major composers for guitar, but also as one of the most representative in the current that ran parallel and contemporary with the greatest composers of the early Romantic period. Moreover, if we consider Giuliani from the standpoint of his position as an exponent of the Italian school, we will realize that he was one of the few, along with Paganini and certain other minor guitar composers, endowed with the necessary qualities to keep the instrumental tradition alive in Italy during the years that witnessed the overwhelming primacy of opera.

This new edition of our collection of 80 Studies by Giuliani, selected from his best-known teaching works, incorporates several changes with respect to the preceding version. The first and most important innovation in this edition is its strict adherence to the original, made possible by the fact that we have gained access to editions of the period. We have thus been able to discard sources that have proved ambiguous or inaccurate. Secondly, in order to provide a complete philological picture of the Studies, we have retained Giuliani’s original notation, even though certain voices might have been realized more completely. And finally, we have changed some of our former fingering criteria, especially those regarding right hand fingerings (almost entirely lacking in the originals), in the interest of following the composer’s style more closely. We also decided to eliminate our own indications of «rest stroke» and suggestions for dynamics, leaving such delicate choices to the interpreter’s discretion. The order of the Studies is the same as in the previous version, except for a few minor changes due to problems of pagination.

Juan Serrano's incredible musical execution has been witnessed and enjoyed by millions around the world. Serrano has drawn awe and praise from his audiences, aficionados, critics, and artistic peers. Critics have called him the "best flamenco guitarist living today." But Juan Serrano is more than just an incredibly gifted guitarist. He is also an exceptional and rare musical resource who can communicate his art on a very personal level unlike other great Spanish guitarists who normally only perform in a strict concert setting where the audience receives little orientation about flamenco from the artist. Serrano speaks both English and Spanish which enables him to give enlightening explanations during his performances that give his audiences a rare insight into flamenco. He has performed on major television and radio programs throughout the world. In addition, Serrano has authored several music books and videos distributed by Mel Bay Publications which instruct guitar players on the origins of flamenco and its techniques. He has also written Flamenco, Body and Soul, a history of flamenco for the aficionado published by the Press at California State University.
